Welcome to Captiva Island, Florida

Captiva Island is a barrier island just north of Sanibel Island, encompassed by the beautiful Gulf of Mexico.  Once a part of Sanibel Island, Captiva Island was formed in 1926 when a powerful hurricane passed through.  The storm surge of the hurricane created a new channel, known as Blind Pass, separating the two Islands. Blind Pass has filled in over the years, but we dredged out once again during 2009, in an effort to keep the two islands separate.  During 2004, Hurricane Charley ripped through the islands, and as the eastern eye wall of the storm struck North Captiva, the island was divided in half leaving a path 400 yards wide across North Captiva. Although this new pass has not been named, the locals refer to the pass as "Charley Pass" or "The North Cap Gap".

Rich in history, Captiva Island become a place for many to seek tranquility.  Famous Americans, such as Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, frequented the island.  In fact, Anne wrote her famous book, "Gift from the Sea" while on vacation on Captiva.  President Teddy Roosevelt spent many a day fishing from the Island, as well as the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay.

According to legend, both the islands of Sanibel and Captiva were once a haven for infamous pirates.  The notorious Jose Gaspar was rumored to have buried his stolen treasure on Sanibel Island and built a prison on "Isle de los Captivas" or Captiva Island.  It was on this island that Gaspar kept his wealthy female prisoners "captive" until he received a suitable ransom.

Captiva was the #1 rated "Romantic Beaches in the U.S. and Nearby" by Amy Ziff, Editor of Travelocity. There are no hotels on Captiva Island, which only adds to the unique charm of this unspoiled, natural tropical paradise. Miles of white sandy beaches, breathtaking sunsets and a wildlife sanctuary is what makes Captiva Island the preferred vacation destination and permanent residency for Floridians and travelers alike.
