Welcome to Estero,SW Florida
Named for the Spanish word "estuary" by the Spanish explorers that happened upon the area in the 1500's, Estero is rich in natural beauty and abundant with wildlife. Estero was once the home to the Koreshan religious sect, followers of Dr. Cyrus Reed Teed. Based on the theory that we, as a people, live on the inside of the Earth's outer crust and that all celestial bodies are contained inside the hollow earth, the Koreshan Unity, as it was called, drew many followers to the area. Enough, in fact, that the unity prospered enough to found its own political party, "The Progressive Liberty Party". Teed and his followers purchased a 320 acre tract along the Estero River where the Koreshan Unity lived communally. Teed claimed to be immortal, therefore the shock after his death in 1908 struck quite a blow to the Koreshan Unity forcing the membership to dwindle significantly. The original tract of land is now owned by the Florida and is known as the Koreshan State Historical Site.
The development of the Germain Arena (home to the Florida Everblades ECHL hockey Team and the Florida Firecats af2 arena football team), the Miromar Outlets and Florida Gulf Coast University (Southwest Florida's first four-year university) has made Estero one of the fastest growing communities in Lee County. Located on the serene Gulf of Mexico and Estero River, Estero offers some of the best fishing in Florida with both fresh and salt water fish varieties. Rich in natural beauty and abundant in wildlife, the opportunities for outdoor recreation are endless.
From single family homes and waterfront properties to large acre farms and condominiums along the beach, the variety of real estate options in Estero are endless. The great weather, friendly community and opportunities to watch the manatees and dolphins from the window of your home is what makes Estero, Florida the perfect place to raise a family, start a business or retire.
